Biometrics in Access Control

Biometric identification or verification has become a mature technology and is widely used in access control systems to improve security and convenience. Nedap is working closely with the best biometric suppliers, offering:

  • Increased security using something you are instead of something you have or know
  • Improved convenience by always having your identifier with you
  • Reduced costs by eliminating the need to buy physical tokens.

Why biometrics?

A person’s hand, finger or face is unique and therefore enables organisations to verify the identity of individuals with a high degree of accuracy. For that reason, it was first used in typical high security environments such as military installations and nuclear power stations, airports etc. Nowadays, biometric security systems have become more and more user-friendly and affordable, and so are used in an increasing number of day-to-day settings.

Identification or verification?

Biometric identification

In situations where ID badges are impractical or inconvenient, biometrics can be used as means of identification. By showing only a biometric parameter such as a finger or face, the person is identified and allowed to enter.

Biometric verification

Biometric verification can be used to improve security. First, the person is identified by their access badge or pin code. Next, they have to present a biometric parameter (their palm, face or finger) to verify the access badge is legitimately theirs. The biometric system processes the data and, if the verification results in a positive match and you are authorised, access is granted.

Biometrics in AEOS

Fully integrating biometrics with AEOS is the optimum way of using biometrics in access control. After registering someone in AEOS, the biometric enrolment can be done at a local biometric reader or at an external device such as a smartphone. After enrolment, the template is distributed to the system’s biometric readers which are connected to AEOS.

For local enrolment, the user interface is fully integrated in AEOS and is based on the biometric vendor’s enrolment interface. The templates stored in the biometric management system are linked to the person in the AEOS database. If necessary, the new template can be verified against all templates in the database to prevent someone being enrolled more than once under different names.

Data & Privacy

By keeping up with the latest IT security trends, AEOS is as safe and secure as possible. For biometric integrations, the key measures are secure communication and secure storage. The communication between AEOS and a biometric management system is always secured and encrypted. The biometric templates are stored within the biometric management system and the user data within AEOS. Consequently, the privacy of the users can be guaranteed.

Benefits

  • AEOS allows customers to combine cards and biometrics in one single platform
  • AEOS only sends strictly necessary user information to the third-party system via encrypted communication channels, so privacy and security of personal data is ensured
  • AEOS assures a user-friendly way of registering and enrolling biometric templates with the technology of your choice
